On a bike or hike adventure with the kids during spring break
It’s spring break! Do you want to do a fun educational activity with children? A children’s route has been set out for spring break in Nieuw-West and Zuidoost. There is a cycling and a walking route. While cycling or walking, the children are given assignments and questions. For example, answering a question about the neighborhood or carrying out an assignment in a playground, they earn letters and numbers to be able to crack a code at the end of the route. During these activities, the children learn all about their neighborhood, about art, doing something together and about nature. The routes have been developed for children aged 9 to 11 years.
How does it work?
The route maps are shown above. For the cycling route you follow the green line and for the walking route you follow the orange line. Along the way you will come across the HiBike logo that is graffitied on the road surface / path, so that you do not miss any important turns. The start of the walking and cycling route in Nieuw-West at primary school ‘t Koggenschip and in Zuidoost at primary school De Blauwe Lijn, but you can also start at another point; you then follow the route from that point.
What do you need?
1) The route map for the children: with the route, the assignments and questions for each stopping point.
2) The instructions for the facilitator: containing the route map, the route description and the answers to the questions.
3) A pen or pencil, a snack and a bottle of water or lemonade for the road.
Part of the HiBike Game
You can download the route maps and guide instructions on this page (right) and print them on A4 paper. The documents are in Dutch.
The children’s route is temporarily there and is part of the HiBike project. Primary schools ‘t Koggenschip and the Blue Line are participating in this project. The HiBike game lasts 6 weeks and encourages children to cycle or walk more often. Not only to school, but also in their free time. The game has been developed for children in groups 5, 6 and 7. HiBike increases cycling skills and knowledge about traffic rules. Children therefore feel and move safer in traffic. HiBike is part of various bicycle stimulation projects of Amsterdam with the aim of encouraging cycling in Nieuw-West, Noord and Zuidoost districts. There is less cycling in these districts than in the other districts in the city. Read more about the HiBike initiative in our article about HiBike.
We wish you lots of cycling and/or walking fun this spring break!
