Trial ‘Fast cyclists to the road’ in full swing
On Constantijn Huygensstraat and part of Bilderdijkstraat, fast cyclists are allowed to cycle on the road instead of the cycle path. The trial, from April 18 to July 19, is based on an idea by Wichert van Engelen. He won the Bicycle Innovation Lab 2022 of Amsterdam Bike City with the theme of how to deal with the different speeds on the cycle path. Why this trial?
Cycle paths are becoming increasingly busy. With more electric bicycles, the speed difference between cyclists is increasing. The streets of the trial have narrow cycle paths and many cyclists, which creates unsafe situations. By allowing fast cyclists to cycle on the road, the municipality wants to find out if this makes the cycle path less busy and safer, and whether the roadway is suitable for fast cyclists.
How is the trial set up?
Cyclists who want to cycle faster are allowed to use the roadway. The recommended speed on the cycle path is a maximum of 20 km/h. The maximum speed for the road is 30 km/h. Electric bicycles may be electrically assisted up to a maximum of 25 km/h. The temporary traffic rules for the trial are indicated with signs and blue markings, as can be seen in the photos below.
What will happen after the trial ends?
After July 19, the trial will be analyzed: the survey among road users, the results of street interviews with cyclists and the results of on-site observations. If the trial is successful, a follow-up study will be done. The results of the trial are expected at the end of this year.
