Trial to improve cycling experience in tunnels in Amsterdam North
Four bicycle tunnels in Amsterdam North will be changed for one day on February 28. For example, with a different type of lighting, a scent or music. Amsterdam Bike City (ABC) is investigating whether these adjustments influence how safe and pleasant cyclists feel in tunnels. To determine which tunnels are experienced as unpleasant, we ask residents to indicate this by completing a short questionnaire. Based on this, it is determined in which tunnels the test will be carried out. ABC is conducting this research on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Transport Region with the aim of improving the cycling experience in tunnels.
The questionnaire
We invite residents to complete the questionnaire and indicate which tunnels in Amsterdam North they experience as less safe or pleasant. On February 28, the survey will be conducted in four tunnels with the most votes. That day we ask cyclists in North what they think of the adjustments. This way we find out which adjustment (hear, smell, feel or see) has the most influence on improving the cycling experience. After the test, the adjustments are removed again.
Follow-up
The results of the trial will be presented to the municipality of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Transport Region. They will use the results when improving bicycle tunnels in Amsterdam and the region.
Go to the questionnaire here. This can be completed until January 29. Completing the questionnaire only takes a few minutes and is anonymous.
Amsterdam Bike City – Innovation Lab
In 2023 we organized the Bicycle Innovation Lab with the theme of social insecurity. We looked for the smartest idea to make cyclists feel safer. This test comes from the winning proposal ‘Tunnelvisionair’ from mobility agency Goudappel. They focus on tunnels because previous research showed that people often experience tunnels as unsafe. This winning proposal will be implemented in a modified form. ABC is conducting the test together with Goudappel.
