Improving the busy Nieuwmarkt cycle route

The Nieuwmarkt cycle route is one of the busiest cycle routes through the east side of the city centre. In the future, we expect even more cyclists which is why we are improving this cycle route. The project team first identifies the bottlenecks that are mapped out through input from residents, entrepreneurs, and users of this route. Read more about what is done with these suggestions.

The Nieuwmarkt cycle route runs from Mr. Visserplein, via Jodenbreestraat, Sint Antoniesbreestraat, Nieuwmarkt, Geldersekade, Prins Hendrikkade and beyond. From Prins Hendrikkade, the route runs via Oostertoegang to river IJ and the ferries to Amsterdam North. We expect more users on Nieuwmarkt route because the rapid expansions in Amsterdam North leads to more cyclists crossing river IJ. The IJplein ferry stop will be moved from the Central Station area to De Ruyterkade East, to enable a direct connection to the Nieuwmarkt cycling route using the ferry.

Safer and better

We want to improve safety and provide cyclists and pedestrians with more space. In order to do this, small adjustments such as adjusting parking spaces will be made but it may also be necessary to make major adjustments. These major adjustments include redesigning a road section, widening a bicycle lane, or adjusting the traffic flow.

The project team first identifies the bottlenecks that are mapped out through input from residents, entrepreneurs, and users (including cyclists) of the route. Using the input, we are now working on redesign for some sections of Nieuwmarkt route. To be continued!
